Alan Bandes began practicing Tai Chi in 1976, under the American Tai Chi pioneer Sophia Delzer, followed by tutelage under C.K. Chu in NY. Studying with Master CK Chu provided Alan with a deep understanding of the mind-body connection as it relates to movement, posture and stress reduction. From this extensive foundation in Yang style Tai Chi,
Alan went on to study the original, mother form of Tai Chi, the Chen Style, under Ren Guangyi, which led him to partner with Ren to build Chi Force – the first global, online school of Chen Tai Chi.

“The study of Tai Chi and related activities requires the perspective of balance between cultivation of the “three treasures” which are: Mind, Body and Spirit. Each interacts with the whole person providing for a healthy outlook on life. ”
I’ve been practicing Tai Chi since 1976. I first started learning the Yang style with Sophia Delzer and then under the tutelage of Master CK Chu in Manhattan. Studying with Master CK Chu provided me with a deep understanding of the connection of mind-body as it relates to movement, posture and stress reduction, both physically and mentally. Through his instruction on meditation, self-massage as well as his unique Nei Gong exercises, my knowledge expanded and provided me with a foundation of knowledge that has helped me develop as both a student and eventually instructor.
Since 2007, I have been learning Chen Tai Chi under the guidance of Master Ren Guangyi. The information and techniques I have learned from him are invaluable. I am constantly gaining new concepts every time I meet with him. Over the years, his guidance has helped me understand the details of bodily alignment as it relates to intent of motion and application of techniques. Through all this, I have become a better instructor.
My total Tai Chi journey from Yang to Chen has helped me create techniques and exercises that enhance my students’ experience. I continually work to improve my instructional techniques to meet the needs and goals of each student. With the help of Master Ren, I have developed Qi Gong techniques that helped me overcome some very difficult, challenging medical conditions which I am now able to share with my students.
My classes include the basic elements of Chen instruction including Standing Mountain, Silk Reeling, beginner’s forms and advanced forms. I also have complimented my instruction with additional Qi Gong, Nei Gong techniques for breath, stress reduction, meditation, flexibility and strength.
All classes include both group and individual activities to help each student maximize their potential. One of my goals is to provide enough insight to help each student become their own teacher so that they can carry on the concepts of Tai Chi beyond the classroom.
I have taught students who have ranged in age from their 20’s through their 80’s. My Tai Chi knowledge has helped me gain insights to help students who have back pain, knee pain, balance issues, Parkinson’s and stress related problems. Recently I’ve been asked by an amazing organization, Support Connection, to teach Tai Chi to women with breast and ovarian cancer.
To me, Tai Chi is not a miracle cure for anything, but with continued effort and practice students can improve their quality of life. Based on my accrued knowledge of Tai Chi and of life, I’m devoted to assisting students in learning how to cultivate what the Chinese philosophers refer to as the three treasures: mind, body, spirit.
Alan teaches Qigong & Nei Gong online through Chi Force, and in-person in Peekskill, NY.
